Customer Profile - Xstrata Copper

Xstrata Copper, headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, operates mines and mineral processing plants in north Queensland, Australia. Xstrata supplies copper, mineral concentrates and lead bullion containing silver to global and domestic customers. The business is committed to operating with a keen focus on cost management and production efficiencies to maximise returns to shareholders.

In support of this goal, Xstrata's Glen Croft implemented Dingo’s Internet based MaintenanceGuy software system to analyse, report and trend an average of 500 oil samples a month. Over 30 Xstrata personnel have either full or read only access to the system and depending on access rights are able to see between 1 and 17 separate location databases. Read only access is provided by Xstrata to selected external contractors to provide remote support on a needs basis.

According to Tony Campbell, Maintenance Planner at the Mt Isa Copper mine “Dingo’s MaintenanceGuy program is the most user friendly oil analysis program I’ve used. I receive an automated summary email from MaintenanceGuy whenever a new sample result for the underground mine has been posted by the lab. The email tells me which components I need to focus on.

Through the provision of a combination of process improvement, education, state or the art systems and external expert support there has been a significant turn around in the attitude and culture of oil condition monitoring at Xstrata Copper Mount Isa sites. Examples of improvements include:

  • sample turn around time improving from 15 days to 2 days
  • Work orders are entered into MIMS for ALL caution and critical results. Previously many were not even entered into the system for a decision to be made on whether to do the work or not.
  • Xstrata personnel are now focused on reducing contaminant levels within oil whereas 6 months ago they were focused on fixing up failures.
  • The number and cost of failures are reducing from historical averages

Australian Naval Aviation gets a "lift" with FleetOil

The Royal Australian Navy operates a fleet of Seahawk, Seaking, Sesprite and Squirrel rotary wing aircraft types in the most hostile aircraft operating environment. These aircraft carry out their mission form the southern Ocean to the deserts of the Middle East and all places in between. To ensure that the aircraft can meet there mission part of the maintenance regime is to conduct spectrometric oil analysis.

The Navy Aviation Systems Program Office (NASPO) recently implemented Dingo's FleetOil program after a thorough evaluation of available alternatives.

Spectrometric Oil Analysis samples are taken by maintenance personnel and forwarded to the contracted oil analysis organisation. The contracted oil analysis organisation forwards the results of all oil analysis electronically to the Navy Aviation Systems Program Office (NASPO) Condition and Health Monitoring Cell for retention and trending.

With the introduction of the Dingo FleetOil system each individual report can be scanned for reporting errors prior to be being inducted into the system thus reducing corrupt data entering the system. Abnormal trends or alarms are displayed automatically upon introduction of electronic data directly from the contractor and can be printed out to form part of the report that is sent to the relevant engineer for analysis.

Dingo FleetOil allows the time spent previously resolving data problems to be spent monitoring trends, refining alarm levels and being more pro active over the whole conditioning monitoring program.

Maintenanceguy and Scientifics Helps to Breathe New Life into Train Air System

Merseyrail, a UK based train company based in Liverpool, operate a fleet of electric multiple units (EMUs) providing a city wide suburban network. The vehicles rely heavily on on-board compressors to supply air for brake and door systems. Failure of a compressor can render the train inoperable, resulting in significant financial penalties. With the introduction of oil condition monitoring and effective reporting and management, using Maintenanceguy, an improvement of 57% in reliability and improvement of 91% in minutes delay attributed to Compressors has been achieved.

Merseyrail’s engineer, Syd Brazier, adds “Using Maintenanceguy, we have improved maintenance management and identified an issue with high levels of copper. The copper, on examination of a stripped down compressor taken out of service before failure, had indicated an issue with a big-end bearing”.

Experience Merseyrail and the rejuvenated historic city of Liverpool on your next visit to the UK, see http://www.merseyrail.org Scientifics provide an oil condition monitoring service within the UK for the transport.
