PRODUCT TIP - Use Group Trending to Set Alarm Levels

Last issue we discussed a strategy for on site alarms.  This issue we will talk about how to use FleetOil to determine workable alarm limits for wear metals.

Alarm limits for fluid properties such as viscosity and contamination need to be considered separately.  Strategies for dealing with these are more clear cut.  Wear metals are tougher to deal with due to the natural variation between machinery types, local conditions and application.  All these factors make it tough to set alarm limits across the board for machine types.

So what can be done?  One strategy is to consider the sample history for your site for each machine type and determine alarms accordingly. FleetOil provides the powerful ability to visually compare results for all machines of a particular type on the one graph.  This means you can eyeball years of data in one fell swoop and choose an alarm level by eye.

*** Note: Appropriate Alarm Groups must be set up for this feature to work.  Alarm groups should correspond with machine types.  For e.g. all Haul Truck Engines of a particular model would be in the same alarm group.

How To Get There:

- Start FleetOil

- On the main menu, click Trends

- On Trend Viewer, browse to the equipment that is part of your target Alarm Group.

- Set up the view so that your target wear metal is on the graph (e.g. FE for iron)

- Click on the wear metal on the legend - you should see it highlighted with a box.

- Click on the Alarm Group Graph tab.  This will take you to a scattergram of all results for the chosen wear metal for that alarm group.

Taking failure history into account and the spread of the data, choose a value that would have resulted in an acceptable number of alarms historically.  This method is not exact but neither are test results.  It is important to trend the results and this method takes site and machine specific behaviour into account.
