PRODUCT TIP - A Site Specific Alarm Strategy

In working with our customers we see a huge range of skill levels and understanding of Oil Analysis alarm limits and how to use them.  Common questions are "..should we use lab alarms or site specific alarms?"; "If we set our own, what should the limits be?"

Both the lab and the site have valuable expertise to apply to the challenges of Oil Analysis.  Many sites use only lab services to trigger alarms.  Augmenting this with site specific expertise has many benefits.

1. Maintain Your Lab Alerts

Your lab has many years of expertise built into their alerting rules and limits.  If you stop using their alerts, you throw away a valuable service.  Lab alerts should be kept operational at least as a first line of defence or safety net - different labs have different levels of sophistication of alert triggering.  You can then augment these with levels tailored to your operation.  Most labs provide some kind of overall sample rating field in their electronic result file.  This field is used by Dingo Software to trigger exceptions.  The field will be called something like OVERALLALARM, RATING, EVALCODE.  If you are unsure what this field is for your lab, contact Dingo.  This field should be left in all of your alarm groups so that lab alerts will trigger exceptions.

2.  Augment With Your own Alarm Levels

You can then add your own specific levels to each alarm group.  Breaking it down to the 3 main areas of fluid analysis helps determine how to

start:

     Fluid Properties

These are non-machine-specific and most labs do a good job of flagging problems here, so leave them till last unless you have specific needs that are not being met.

     Contamination

There are industry guidelines published on acceptability levels for particle counts and ISO cleanliness codes.  Check how your lab uses these and satisfy yourself that levels are appropriate for your operation.  If you are right into a proactive regime and controlling contamination tightly to achieve component life extensions, it is unlikely that standard lab alert limits will meet your needs.  In this case, add your own levels to the appropriate alarm groups.

     Machine Condition

This is where you can really make a difference with your own alarm levels.  Use your site breakdown history and oil analysis history to determine appropriate trigger levels for the machine condition indicators. Techniques for doing this using FleetOil will be the subject of the next issue.

FROM THE LAIR - Mobile Alerts!

Imagine receiving equipment condition alerts wherever you are. Maintenance Personnel are often out and about in the plant or on the site, making it difficult to receive information about equipment condition.  A system that would email, page or message your mobile device wherever you are would mean you get notification of alerts, perhaps even while you are near the equipment in question.
