PRODUCT TIP - BACKUP PROCEDURES

What should you back up to ensure data is safe????  Many of our customers are fortunate enough to have IT Departments with managed networks and good backup procedures.  Quite a few are smaller sites without this luxury.  In either case, it pays to be aware of which parts of the system should be backed up and how often they should be backed up.

FLEETOIL BACKUP

All FleetOil data is stored in a folder \Fleetwin.  It may be network or local.  Following are the folders, what type of data is stored and how often it should be backed up:

\fleetwin\conv

Temporary conversion files.  Is normally empty.  Backup is not necessary.

\fleetwin\data

Working database files.  Normally approximately 370 files.  This folder contains all your working Oil Analysis information.  It is highly important to backup daily (or as often as you use it).  If you operate more than one database, there will be sub-folders below \data.  These must be backed up as above.

\fleetwin\idapi

Database interface files.  Once the system has been setup, this will not change often.  Backup monthly.

\fleetwin\infosrce

Files from labs or hardware that are about to be read into the system. This will normally be empty.  Backup daily to ensure you catch any files that are not read in.

\fleetwin\pdoxusrs

Temporary file locking and control information.  Backup not necessary.

\fleetwin\pfwrun5

Database system files.  Once the system has been setup, this will not change often.  Backup monthly.

\fleetwin\priv

Temporary user files.  Backup not necessary.  This folder must be local (C drive).

\fleetwin\system

Application system files.  Once the system has been setup, this will not change often.  Backup monthly.

\fleetwin\temp

Temporary user files.  Backup not necessary.  This folder must be local (C drive).

\fleetwin\tutdata

Tutorial database.  Backup daily if using it regularly, otherwise backup monthly.

LUBE EXPLORER BACKUP

All Lube Explorer data is stored in a folder \Program files\Dingo\Lube Explorer\ if the installation is local.  If the installation is on the network, the folder is user defined.  For the purpose of description, I will assume the complete installation is in a folder \Lube Explorer:

\Lube Exporer\lubex.mdb

Main database file.  This contains all working information.  Backup daily.  All other files in this folder are system files and may be backed up monthly.

\Lube Explorer\...sub folders

The \temp sub-folder is for temporary user files and does not need to be backed up.  The other sub-folders contain files from labs or hardware and should be backed up daily.

When thinking about backing up, keep in mind how much data you are prepared to lose.  It is also a good idea to prove the restore process - move your current data to a safe place and restore from the backup tape or disk.  A crash may not have happened to you yet, but we have helped several customers in this situation...it does happen, so make sure you are prepared!
