PRODUCT TIP - Cross-Pollinate Your Trends

One of the benefits of FleetOil or Lube Explorer to users is the ability to set up different graph views and save the settings.  Many labs provide groupings of test results that fall roughly into the categories oil properties, metals and contamination.  Many texts also promote the use such categories and they are indeed useful for grouping test results for the purpose of reporting.

However when monitoring Oil Analysis test results for your equipment, it pays to mix things up a little.  Graphical result presentation allows you to see very quickly any correlation between different results.  Careful selection of tests displayed together on the same graph will greatly enhance your ability to pick up problems.  Set up multiple views by choosing a few test results from one category and varying the test from another category.  Below are a couple of examples to get you started:

----- Particle Counts and Wear Metals; Particle Counts and Silicon ----- Advanced stages of wear may not show up conclusively with spectrometric results alone.  Choose a couple of the larger particle size ranges together with iron, and some other wear metals, depending on the type of machine being monitored.  Remember, most spectrometers will not measure particles larger than 5-8 microns so having the particle counts on the same graph as the wear metals allows you to cover more of the particle size spectrum in one view, and easily see the interaction between the trends.  Look for correlations between the trends.  If your particle counts are increasing but wear metals are not significantly, the increased particle count may be due to dirt.  Switch to your view of silicon with particle counts quickly to see if the trends follow each other.  If they do, dirst is your problem and you can be sure the wear metal trends will follow before too long.
